Jamila Embroidered Velvet Abaya

Jamila is the most decorated piece in this range and the only one in velvet. Embroidery and beading run over a deep purple ground, and a split hem keeps the skirt from reading as heavy. Velvet behaves differently to a flat weave — it absorbs light rather than bouncing it, so the beading reads as texture first and shine second. If you only own one formal piece, this is the register it should be in.

Styling note

This is a wedding or a formal walima piece, not a dinner-party one. Keep the hijab plain and matte — a satin-finish scarf next to velvet is one texture too many. Gold rather than silver, drop earrings rather than studs, and a small hard-case clutch. Let the abaya be the only thing with anything on it. Velvet also holds a crease, so hang it rather than folding it away between events.
